My Story
I first found my way to HCWC in October of 2019. I found out about the organization through a program called Leadership San Marcos. We toured the facility as one of our outings and I was amazed at what they had to offer. One service they offered that sparked my interest was their FREE counseling for victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence this sparked my interest. As I toured the facility I began shaking. Shaking because I was triggered by my abuse but also because I was so excited to learn that there were FREE services that were available to help me.

I started my journey attending Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a counselor a few weeks later. I learned that the services they provide are free regardless of income. I was struggling with money at the time and this provided me the mental health services I needed badly and could not afford for free. The application process was easy and the staff made me feel so welcome. I spent 8 months in individual counseling and 4 months in group counseling. I can genuinely say IT CHANGED MY LIFE!

During counseling I found myself trying to implement the new tools I learned into my personal relationships and marriage. Unfortunately my marriage did not improve, it only got worse. In the midst of our separation I found myself finding refuge in the Women's Shelter at HCWC. I spent 7 days in their shelter with my son.

HCWC provided me with free legal advice and counseling for my son. They also have new transitional housing availible on site. This is a place women can live for 12 to 18 months with program goals assessed monthly.

A few months after counseling I realized that my symptoms were extensive and that I needed more help. This led me to see a local psychiatrist, Paul Whitelock who was able to give me a diagnosis, bipolar disorder. I was able to find the right medication to treat my mental and physical symptoms. Thankfully I am doing much better and finally able to fully pursue my dreams.

HCWC is a blessing in my life and in our community. If you are struggling please reach out.
